NWCC China Business Culture Workshop

Workshop sessions:

  1. Pre-visit session I, Overview of government and corporate structures and strategic guidelines (2hr)

    This first session is a two hour overview of the business, political and cultural landscape of China, the basics of doing business in China and strategic guidelines for behavior under various circumstances. Topics covered will include an examination of who you will be seeing during your trip so as to facilitate an understanding of how they fit into the interrelationship of government and private sector entities, as well as a discussion on how to understand their motivations and how to engage appropriately with them to maximize your goals for the trip.

  2. Pre-visit session II, Sector Specific Intelligence (1hr)

    The class will break into smaller groups led by NWCC China experts specialized in different areas (manufacturing, education, technology, investment, etc.) to discuss the key factors at play in those sectors of most importance to you as well as strategic advisement on how to reach your specific goals for the trip effectively and efficiently.

  3. Pre-visit session III, Cultural intelligence in action- Guidelines for behavior and tools for success (1hr)

    When NiHao (hello) and ZaiJian (good bye) can no longer impress your Chinese hosts, what should you say at meetings and over drinks to show your attention to the partnership and your appreciation of the local culture? NWCC experts will provide you with localized cultural intelligence (local history, lore and famous literary figures) of the geographic areas you are going to visit, as well as facilitate your memorization of a few lines in Chinese that can break down cultural barriers and really make the host see you as one of them. (Be prepared for surprised cheers and one more round of drinks). Participants will be provided with a packet of material to bring with them as a reference.

  4. Post-visit session (2hr)

    Tell us what you have experienced in China and discuss with us any questions or confusion that you may have regarding your trip. NWCC China experts will help you analyze and interpret the situations that you encountered. Show us the business cards you have collected. NWCC China experts will examine and dissect companies during the session for you (1 business card per student). We will read beyond their words and help you to understand more fully the situation you are dealing with.
