CHINA BUSINESS
NETWORK PRESENTS
The Chinese Aviation Industry:
An Intersection of Market Forces and Government Regulation
With Matt Barton of GCW Consulting
ABOUT THE SPEAKER:
Currently based in Seattle, Matt Barton has worked in the aviation
industry since 1998. He is a leading authority on Chinese aviation economics,
and has provided planning advice and growth forecasts for over ten different
airports in mainland China – including Beijing and Shanghai. His
diverse assignments in the wider aviation sector have included restructuring
projects for several U.S. and foreign airlines (including United Airlines
during the recent bankruptcy), evaluating acquisition targets for private
equity funds, and projecting the market feasibility of new aircraft
types. He has an MBA from the London Business School and a bachelor’s
degree from the University of California.
ABOUT THE PROGRAM:
Since the early 1990s, civil aviation in China has grown at a breakneck
pace, doubling in size on average every six years. Many observers expect
this growth trend to continue for the foreseeable future. What should
foreign investors, airlines, airports, and aerospace manufacturers make
of this optimistic expectation? Is the industry an “automatic
slam dunk,” or will it eventually mirror its lackluster peers
in the United States and elsewhere? Drawing on firsthand experience
from working within Chinese companies and on behalf of foreign investors,
Mr. Barton will offer his views and thoughts on the state of the Chinese
civil aviation industry, provide opinions on the role of government
in managing the “invisible hand” of market forces, and provide
a number of practical lessons from companies operating in the most dynamic
and exciting aviation market in the world.
