ABOUT THE PROGRAM:
We are presenting a panel of experts talking about their experience
doing agriculture business in China. Mr. Mayer will speak about the
State's role. Mr. Richards will speak about the nursery stock business
in China. And, Mr. Baker will speak from the perspective of a commercial
seed company. A question and answer period will follow.
ABOUT THE SPEAKERS:
Patrick Mayer, Oregon
Department of Agriculture, is an international trade professional
with over 13 years of experience in relationship building, consumer
product business development, transportation, and global project management,
with expertise in East Asia.
Don Richards is owner and president of Applied Horticultural
Consulting in Lake Oswego and co-owner of Sauvie Island Ornamentals.
Don is also U.S. Managing Partner of the Plant Trading Network, a cooperative
that helps facilitate trade between the western United States Green
Industry, China and Japan.
Don represents the Oregon Association
of Nurseries (OAN) with more than 1,500 wholesale growers, retailers,
landscapers and suppliers. The OAN is one of the largest state nursery
association in the U.S. Oregon's ornamental horticulture industry is
the state's largest agricultural commodity, with annual sales of more
than $1 billion.
Mike Baker is a senior vice president of Pennington
Seed and its general manager in Lebanon, Oregon. Mike is a past President
of the Oregon Seed Council,
the Oregon Seed Trade Association and served as Chairman of the Oregon
Seed Council Research Committee from 1988-1996.
