Movie Night --The People's Republic of Capitalism (2008)

photo

On Thursday, April 30th, the NW China Council is showing the 11th film of its "Chinese Movie Night" presentations. Once a month, we schedule dinner and a film, followed by a guided discussion of the social, cultural and historical aspects each film presents.

Join us for this timely and interesting journalist’s view of modern day China and it’s complex inter- relationship with the US economy.

Part 4: The Fast Lane:

China’s streets are jammed with cars. 25,ooo new vehicles are added every day. More Buicks are sold in China than in the US. There, they are high quality, desirable rides. But more cars mean more accidents, traffic, and pollution. Chinese automakers are gearing up to enter the US market with low cost family sedans.

Part 4: It’s the Economy Stupid

In this concluding segment, Koppel explores the downside of the nation’s booming economy. Koppel descends into a coal mine to see how the fuel that feeds the economy is blanketing its skies and cities with polluted air. He also explores the thorny issues of human rights.

Take this opportunity to dig deeper into China, as it embraces capitalism with gusto, but is still ruled by the iron fist of the Chinese Communist Party.
