Movie Night -- Spring in a Small Town (1948)
On Thursday, May 28th, the NW China Council is showing the 12th film of its "Chinese Movie Night" presentations. Once a month, we schedule dinner and a film, followed by a guided discussion of the social, cultural and historical aspects each film presents.
Spring in a Small Town (1948) is a movie classic that speaks to love, desire, and loyalty in post-war China. Hailed as "the
best Chinese movie ever" on its release in 1948, it was suppressed at the
time for lacking "revolutionary fervor". Re-released, and remade in color in
2002, we have chosen the original version for its film noir cinematography,
and sparse dialog. Easily followed by basic Mandarin speakers, the dialog is supplemented by English sub-titles.
The movie is preceded by a four course Chinese dinner, with soup and appetizers.
