U-Theatre A whirlwind of athletic drumming, martial arts, Buddhist chanting, and mesmerizing movement. The spectacular U-Theatre, Taiwan's most revered theatre, dance and music troupe, has been called philosophy in motion. The pronunciation of the letter "U" is similar to the Chinese word for "excellence," and U-Theatre, founded by Artistic Director Liu Ruo-Yu in 1988, adheres to the Zen belief that a true artist should balance artistic skill with self-improvement (the "Tao"). U-Theatre will make its Portland debut with its magnificent Meeting with Bodhisattva, a seamless 80-minute dance-theatre work that depicts an individual's journey toward becoming a Bodhisattva or 'enlightened being' in Buddhism. The 14 performers of U-Theater alternately explode in movement or repose in controlled serenity, evoking the fierceness of martial arts and the elegance of tai-chi. more info: [click here]
