First Saturday Group presents:

Lushan

"From the Boxer Rebellion to the Hoyt Arboretum:
The Lushan Botanical Garden"
by Elsa Porter

Founded in 1934, the Lushan Garden became the first botanical garden in China.  Elsa Porter, a Northwest China Council Board member, will present an illustrated talk about China, where she was born and spent her early childhood.   She will trace the history of American engagement in China, which helped to create the Lushan Botanical Garden, and describe the serendipitous encounters that have led to the partnership of two gardens: The Hoyt Arboretum in Portland and The Lushan Botanical Garden in Jiangxi Province, as well as the development of a ‘sister mountain‘ relationship with Mt. Hood.  Protected by Elsa's father during the Japanese invasion, the Garden has flourished during the last half century and is now an important international subalpine botanical garden.  It shares Oregon's climate (193 foggy days a year) and wealth of ferns, conifers, magnolias, and rhododendrons.
