Learn All About Spring Couplets

Join China Council resident artist and language teacher Willow Zheng and the distinguished calligrapher, Yan Buliang, to learn about Chinese New Year chun lian, or spring couplets. Chun lian are customarily written on red strips of paper with black ink and placed at the main entranceway to one’s home during Spring Festival. Willow and Mr. Yan will introduce several popular chun lian and invite participants to create their own using a Chinese brush and ink. Children, accompanied by parents, are most welcome.

Chun lian is a special type of dui lian, or couplet, written on vertical strips of red paper. The first (upper) line is posted on the right side of the front door. The second (lower) line is posted on the left side of the door. In addition, a third horizontal piece may be posted across the top of the door.
